Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size, weight, and volume of excessively large breasts. It is commonly sought by individuals, typically women, who experience physical discomfort, pain, and limitations in their daily activities due to the excessive weight of their breasts.
This procedure not only provides physical relief but can also contribute to improved posture, reduced strain on the neck and back, and an enhanced quality of life for those who undergo it.
You could consider breast reduction surgery if you are experiencing physical discomfort, chronic pain, or limitations in their daily activities due to the size and weight of their breasts. The procedure offers tangible relief from issues like neck, back, and shoulder pain, as well as skin irritation caused by the constant friction of larger breasts.
Keep in mind that individual experiences may vary, and consulting with a qualified surgeon is essential to determine if breast reduction surgery is appropriate for your specific circumstances.
So what is the process for a breast reduction at Mode Plastic Surgery?
1. A referral from a GP to be able to claim Medicare and health fund rebates.
2. Your initial consultation with Dr Aggarwal to discuss the procedure
3. You will need to obtain a mammogram or ultrasound if not already done so (check with your health fund if you cover includes this).
4. Second consultation with Dr Aggarwal to finalise and schedule your surgery
5. Your breast reduction surgery with an overnight stay in hospital
6. Post surgery reviews with Dr Aggarwal at 1 week, 2 weeks, 8 weeks, 6 months and 12 months.
A breast reduction can be claimed through Medicare if it is deemed to be necessary, for reasons such as;
You may also be able to claim from your private health insurer.
The out of pocket cost for breast reduction, with private health fund coverage for item number 45523 (Breast reduction for medical reasons), is approximately $13,500. This is inclusive of
A quote will be provided after consultation and the cost may increase depending on complexity. For example the cost is higher with requirement for lateral wall liposuction, need for nipple grafting, or other medical conditions that may make the procedure more complicated. This will be discussed at the time of consultation.
Recovery from breast reduction surgery varies from person to person, however below is a general outline of the recovery timeline.
Most importantly, Dr Aggarwal and the team at Mode Plastic Surgery will always be on hand to answer any questions or concerns before or after your surgery.
Day 1-2: You’ll likely stay in the hospital for monitoring immediately after surgery. Pain, swelling, and discomfort are common during this period.
Day 3-7: You will be discharged from the hospital, but you’ll need to rest and limit physical activities. Pain will subside in this period and the swelling initially increase then slowly decreases. We advise to wear a surgical bra for support.
You’ll continue to rest and avoid strenuous activities. Follow your surgeon’s instructions for wound care, medication, and activity restrictions.
Swelling will begin to subside, but some bruising and residual swelling may persist.
We undertake weekly reviews in this period.
Most people can start gradually increasing their activity levels, but avoid heavy lifting or intense exercise. You may return to light work if it doesn’t involve physical strain. You may resume driving after week 2.
Incisions will start to heal, but scars will still be prominent. Follow your surgeon’s scar care instructions.
You can potentially resume more regular activities, but continue to avoid heavy lifting and high-impact exercises.
Swelling and bruising should continue to improve.
Most individuals can return to their usual exercise routine, though gradually. Continue to monitor your healing and follow-up with your surgeon as scheduled.
Scars will start to fade, but complete healing and fading can take up to a year or more.
By this time, you should be fully back to your normal activities, including exercise and more strenuous physical tasks.
Swelling will have largely subsided, and your breasts will have settled into their new shape. Scars will continue to improve in appearance.
Your breasts will continue to evolve in terms of shape and appearance, and scars will continue to fade. Maintain regular check-ups with your surgeon to monitor your progress.
It’s important to note that these are general guidelines, and individual experiences may vary. Always follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions and attend all scheduled follow-up appointments for the best outcome.
The breast reduction before and after pictures below are patients of Dr Shagun Aggarwal, a Specialist Plastic Surgeon, fellowship trained in breast, body & face cosmetic surgery plus reconstructive microsurgery.
This patient had a breast reduction and the result is shown here after 3 months. Weight has been reduced whilst a beautiful and proportionate shape has been created.
This procedure is life-changing and patients often remark “I wish I had it done sooner”.
This breast reduction before and after shows the benefits of a reduced, proportional breast shape with scars that are easy to conceal and fade with time.
Our lovely patient also gained a significant part of her torso from the reduction in the breast size, and almost immediate relief from back, neck and shoulder pain. The new shape & size is also more suitable for her active lifestyle without making breast too small.
Breast drooping or ptosis after breast feeding can leave women feeling self conscious about their appearance. No amount of weight loss or exercise can improve that droop.
Dr Aggarwal helped this patient to reduce the volume and lifting the breast to a more appropriate level for her frame.
The result also improved her neck and back pain associated with the breast weight. This breast reduction before and after photo shows the results from only two months post op and the scars will fade over the next 6-12 months. We are delighted with the progress and more importantly so is our patient! Thank you to our patient for allowing us to share these lovely results.
