Tummy Tuck at Mode

What is a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, or Abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove surplus skin and fat from the lower and middle abdomen while also tightening the abdominal wall muscles.

This surgical intervention can bring about a significant transformation in the appearance of your abdomen and can be combined with liposuction for enhanced results in the targeted area. It can produce a beautiful aesthetic result with flattened contour and shape.

Why a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is effective in removing both excess skin and fat in the lower abdomen to produce an improved shape and contour, which is often difficult to remove via diet and exercise as this skin may be stretched as result of previous pregnancy or weight gain and loss.

In cases where you’ve undergone a C-section previously, Dr Aggarwal will usually incorporate and remove your previous scar as part of the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) procedure. Many of the stretch marks in the lower abdomen, if present, will also be usually removed. In particular one of the biggest improvements is by the tightening of the underlying muscles which are difficult to restore after previous stretching (via pregnancy or weight gain).  A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) addresses issues like excess skin or a “flap,” a protruding belly, diminished core strength, loss of shape, and unwanted love handles or bulges in undesirable areas. However, at its core, it’s also about regaining your confidence.

Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

  1. Eliminates excess skin and fat from the abdomen
  2. Tightens abdominal wall muscles for improved core strength, reduced urinary incontinence and long term improvement in back pain
  3. Reshapes and contours the abdomen
  4. Addresses concerns such as overhanging skin, belly bulges, and love handles
  5. Enhances physical appearance and self-confidence

Keep in mind that individual experiences may vary, and consulting with a qualified specialist plastic surgeon is essential to determine if abdominoplasty surgery is appropriate for your specific circumstances.

Can I claim from Medicare for a Tummy Tuck?

There are specific indications for which there is a Medicare item number and therefore some of the out of pocket costs may be partially covered by Medicare and an appropriate health fund. If you are suitable for a Medicare item number, this will be advised to you during the consultation, and a quote provided indicating the rebates and out of pocket costs.

1. Post pregnancy muscle separation – Medicare item number 30175

There is now a Medicare item number associated with muscle separation of greater than 3 cm. This has to be demonstrated via imaging such as an Ultrasound or CT scan, combined with a weakness of core muscles.

You will also require a health fund, that covers this item number, to cover hospital / theatre fees, and rebates for surgeon, assistant and anaesthetist.

2. Significant weight loss causing loose skin – Medicare item number 30177:

For this item number to be claimable one would need to meet the following guidelines

  • That you have had significant weight loss defined as 5 BMI points or more (unrelated to pregnancy). This mean women who have experienced a weight loss of at least 15kgs or more, without weight fluctuations for at least 6 months, or
  • The level of excess skin is interfering with daily living, or
  • The use of non-surgical treatment for skin irritation caused by excess skin has failed to work

3. There may be an item number claimable for hernias present in the abdominal wall such   as a ventral or umbilical hernia. This would need to be demonstrated on imaging such as ultrasound or CT scan.

How it Works

So what is the process for a tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) at Mode Plastic Surgery?

  1. If you are claiming your tummy tuck on Medicare then first you will need a referral from a GP
  2. If your procedure is classed as cosmetic and not medical then you’re required to do a telephone questionnaire assessment about Body Dysmorphic Disorder – this will be performed by one of the team at Mode
  3. Your initial consultation with Dr Aggarwal to discuss the procedure. You will be provided with a comprehensive quote after the consultation.
  4. Second consultation with Dr Aggarwal to finalise and schedule your surgery
  5. Your tummy tuck surgery, then usually 2-3 nights in hospital
  6. Post surgery reviews with Dr Aggarwal at 1 week, 2 weeks, 8 weeks, 6 months and 12 months.

Price of a Tummy Tuck

The price of a tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) in Sydney, with a Medicare item number, starts from around $12,000.

The price of a cosmetic tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) in Sydney, with no Medicare item number, would be over $20,000.

These costs are all inclusive at Mode, consisting of:

  • Surgical fees
  • Hospital and theatre fees (for 3 hour procedure) and fees for 3 night stay in hospital
  • Anaesthetist fees
  • Assistant fees
  • Follow up

A quote will be provided after consultation and the cost may increase depending on complexity. This will be discussed at the time of consultation.

Recovery from Breast Reduction

Recovery from tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery varies from person to person, however below is a general outline of the recovery timeline.

Most importantly, Dr Aggarwal and the team at Mode Plastic Surgery will always be on hand to answer any questions or concerns before and after your surgery.

Most people stay in hospital for 2-3 nights, and may go home with a drain in their tummy. Patients start walking hunched over and by the end of the first week they are starting to walk almost straight. Heavy lifting or exercise is disallowed for 8 weeks and strenuous exercise for 3 months. For 8 weeks you will be required to wear a binder (which is like a corset) over the tummy. You can shower after 48 hours, but avoid swimming in a pool or beach for 2-3 weeks until all wounds have healed, and all drains are out.

Before & After Photos from Dr Aggarwal's patients

The breast reduction before and after pictures beloware patients of Dr Shagun Aggarwal, a Specialist Plastic Surgeon, fellowship trained in breast, body & face cosmetic surgery plus reconstructive microsurgery.

Being quite a small frame, this patient’s abdominal muscles separated during her first pregnancy. No amount of exercise would restore her muscles.

With approximately 3-5 nights in hospital, then weekly visits to the clinic in the postoperative phase. We are delighted with these results and more importantly so is she!! Thank you to our patients for sharing these results!
