Louise had been diagnosed with left breast DCIS or pre-invasive breast cancer (DCIS stands for ductal carcinoma in situ and refers to when the cells that line the ducts have changed to cancer cells but haven’t spread through the walls of the ducts into the nearby breast tissue). Her right breast remained cancer free and she had no plans for a right prophylactic mastectomy.
After a long discussion with Dr Aggarwal, Louise decided to undergo a two stage breast reconstruction. A tissue expander was inserted at the first stage at the same time as her skin sparing mastectomy – this was mainly due to the loss of a significant amount of skin on the left breast in order to remove her nipple. The second stage was after subsequent expansions and it involve exchange to a permanent silicone implant.
Louise is now almost 5 years after her reconstructive surgery, she feels much stronger and very proud of herself for getting through this as well as other stuff going on in her life. This part of the journey has really helped and she’s looking at moving forward.
*Breast Reconstruction is considered to be reconstructive surgery and has associated Medicare item numbers listed in the MBS. This is not cosmetic surgery. It is focused totally on reconstructing the form of the body after trauma or defect – in this case building a breast after cancer surgery. It can also include symmetrising or refinement procedures aimed at improving the results of the breast reconstruction performed.
