Breast lift in surgery is popular for women who want to improve their overall physical appearance, including self-confidence. Breast Lift (Mastopexy) is performed to restore a more natural, aesthetic shape to the breast, as well as to elevate the nipple into a more appropriate position.
A breast lift (mastopexy) is a surgical procedure designed to reshape and reposition the breasts for a more lifted, youthful appearance. At Mode Plastic Surgery in Sydney, breast lift surgery is available for suitable candidates concerned with sagging, loss of shape, or breast position changes due to pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or ageing.
A breast lift focuses on improving breast shape and projection rather than increasing size. In some cases, it can be combined with breast augmentation to restore volume or with breast reduction to reduce size. Your treatment plan is tailored to your needs, which are assessed during your consultation.
At Mode Plastic Surgery, all breast lift procedures are performed by Dr Aggarwal, a qualified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in breast surgery. The focus is on patient safety, natural results, and personalised care.
If you are considering a breast lift in Sydney, it’s important to understand that recovery and results vary for each patient. A detailed consultation is required to assess your suitability, explain the procedure, and outline potential risks.
In some cases, patients may be eligible for a Medicare item number for breast lift surgery, depending on clinical criteria such as significant sagging after pregnancy or weight loss. Our team can assist with this assessment and provide information about potential health fund rebates.

This procedure is for women who have a droop to their breasts (called breast ptosis). There are several causes for breast ptosis with the most common being breast feeding after pregnancy, weight loss, and natural process of ageing.
Breast ptosis, or sagging of the breasts, is an issue that many women will experience at some point during their lifetimes, particularly when breast feeding after pregnancy. It can also become noticeable as early as in one’s twenties and will slowly worsen over time with weight changes and the effects of aging. Regardless of the cause, it’s important for women to understand breast ptosis so they can make decisions about how best to address both its causes and any implications for their health.

1 = indicates a mild degree of ptosis where the nipple sits at the fold of the breast.
2 and 3 = indicate a more severe degree of ptosis where the nipple sits below the fold of the breast.
In general women whose nipples are below the fold of the breast will always need a breast lift to achieve an aesthetic breast shape.
Some women will need the addition of implants (called augmentation-mastopexy). This is when:

Dr Aggarwal will provide you with specific instructions on how to prepare for your procedure. This includes smoking cessation at least 6 weeks (preferably more) prior to surgery, and ceasing any supplements that may predispose to bleeding (such as fish oil, Gingko, Ginseng, turmeric, circumin, garlic or herbal supplements) 1 week prior tsurgery. You should also arrange for someone to take you home after your surgery since it is performed under general anesthesia.
Breast lift procedure usually takes between two and three hours depending on the complexity of the case. You may also receive implants or fat grafting at this time if desired. The incisions will then be closed with sutures and covered with dressings or bandages as necessary.
Once your breast lift surgery is complete, you will be taken into a recovery room where medical staff will monitor your heart rate and other vital signs while you rest until you wake up from the anesthesia. Afterward, someone must drive you home – if going home the same day, you must stay with someone for the first night following your surgery in case of any complications such as bleeding or infection that require immediate medical attention.
You can expect some bruising and swelling around the incision sites which should start subsiding within ten days of the procedure; and at this time most patients are off all pain medications.

Most patients are able to resume desk type occupations after 1 week, and resume driving in the second week. A compression bra is worn for the first 6-8 weeks after surgery.
While a good idea of shape is evident at the 6-8 week mark, there can still be residual swelling after this time. The final shape is usually evident at around 3 months psot-operatively. Scars can take several months and sometimes over a year to settle post surgery. In some patients this can be longer depending on their genetic subtype and background. A breast lift is therefore an excellent procedure for patients who desire improved shape, with a trade off for scars that will fade over time.

A scar has to be placed all the way around the nipple and areola to achieve a breast lift. In general the scars can be of three different types as listed below.

Peri-areolar
This scar has the advantage of:
However this scar has some disadvantages
Lollipop (Vertical Breast Lift Scar)
The advantage of this scar are:
The disadvantages are few but include:
Anchor scar (Wise pattern Breast Lift Scar)
The advantage of this scar are:
The disadvantages are few but mainly that there are extra scars compared to the periareolar and lollipop approaches. In general, we find that these scars heal well become more inconspicuous over time. Due to the T shaped scar, sometimes there is slower healing at the T junction.

Every surgery carries risks, and therefore one must consider if risks outweigh the benefits for your own personal situation. If they do then the surgery may be well worth it. Dr Aggarwal will discuss the pros and cons of surgery with you during your consultation.
When choosing a breast lift surgeon in Sydney, prioritise a Specialist Plastic Surgeon with FRACS (Plast) – a recognised Australian specialist qualification from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Consider experience with mastopexy and hospital accreditation.
Dr Shagun Aggarwal is a FRACS‑qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon with fellowship training in cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery and advanced microsurgery, and performs breast lift procedures in accredited Sydney hospitals including Sydney Adventist Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital and Royal Hospital for Women.
A recommended breast lift surgeon should have:
1. FRACS (Plast) – Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
2. Registered with AHPRA in the specialist plastic surgery scope
3. Accredited to operate in licensed hospitals
4. Documented experience with mastopexy and combined lift techniques
Dr Aggarwal also holds postgraduate degrees, completed international fellowships in breast surgery, and holds appointments at major public and private hospitals in Sydney.
Breast lift surgery varies with sagging, volume and skin quality. Surgeons who regularly perform mastopexy and combined procedures (lift with implant) are better placed to tailor technique and optimise scarring.
Dr Aggarwal’s expertise includes cosmetic breast surgery as well as advanced reconstructive training, reflecting broad practical experience across breast procedures as part of his specialist plastic surgery practice in Sydney.
Unlike breast augmentation, a breast lift focuses on reshaping and elevating existing breast tissue, rather than increasing volume. Proper nipple repositioning, incision pattern selection, and scar management are essential for natural results.
Choosing a surgeon with specific mastopexy expertise ensures outcomes that are proportionate, symmetrical, and long-lasting.
Key points when reviewing results:
1. Breast position and upper-pole shape
2. Natural nipple height and orientation
3. Symmetry appropriate to anatomy
4. Scar placement relative to lift degree
A consultation allows you to review results tailored to your breast shape and surgical goals. You can see before & after breast lift photos from some of Dr Aggarwal’s patients here.

Good questions include:
1. Are you FRACS‑accredited and experienced in mastopexy?
2. How many breast lift procedures do you perform per year?
3. What lift technique is recommended for my shape?
4. Where will my surgery be performed and is the facility accredited?
5. What support and scar management do you provide?
These questions help assess experience, safety, and personalised planning rather than relying on the surgeons claims.
